I inherited type 2 diabetes from dad's side of family so my best advise would be to not play games with the disease. If you have symptoms, go be checked early so that you can get on a good plan and hopefully be able to forgo complications that are harder to handle.

Below are a few websites that contain great recipes so that you can have your desserts and other sweets and not feel guilty.

It's not the one cookie, piece of cake, donut, or any sweet that hurts the diabetic, it's the one more all the time. Do eat sugars but be sure you fit them into the carbohydrate counts for your daily allotment.
References :
http://www.diabetic-diet-recipes.com/diabetic_recipes.htm

You can educate yourself on the type of diabetes that your family member has. And then ask them questions about it to show that you are interested and concerned. But be careful about giving them any unsolicited advice.

Most diabetics with a well known history know what they can and can't eat and how much and how often. They don't have to give up sweets - they just have to count the total number of carbs.

If they seem receptive, you could offer to take walks with them each night, or work with them to create interesting, low carb recipes.
References :
you can let them know that there are alot of healthy foods out now that actually tastes good, there are also sweets for dibetics, because they have to keep their sugar at a certain level and include exercising.
References :
you can do by simply doing a good diet. you can eat anything but keep exercising and moving and not get heavy and you can do things sparingly. if you do that you could maybe not be diabetic till late in life and then it would be ok. the thing is you Have to keep weight down and that is how you do it.
