But my question is for people who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, What was it like when you first thought you had this decease? How did you feel at the time and what were some of the big signs that you had it? PLEASE BE VERY DETAILED

Thank you very much.

  • Cindi W says:

    Large amounts of urine output
    Increased thirst that cannot be quenched.
    Sweet smell of urine
    Cuts or wounds that are slow to heal
    Yeast infection
    Blurry Vision.
    Fatigue

    If you suspect you have Diabetes, you need to start with a baseline blood test to determine what your levels are (glucose, insulin)

    Your doc will most likely order a Glucose Tolerance Test as well.

    5 years ago I developed type 1 I was 29 years old. It started when i lost 10 pounds w/ out trying (I was in normal weight range to start with) I didn’t think much of it. Around the same time I started a new job. So when I was tired all the time I thought I was just over worked. Then I lost more weight, but I was eating all the time. Lots of junk food too which is something I never did. It seamed like no matter what I ate I lost weight but was starving. then I noticed I had to pee all the time. Like 5-6 times in the middle of the night. And 15 times during the day. I would drink 2 or 3 2 liters of diet pepsi a day so I thought I was addicted to the aspertame and all the fluid was the reason for peeing a lot. It wasn’t until I got weaker and weaker that i knew something was up. I was watching er and I saw a story like mine so I called the dr. and thay did blood work the next day. Fasting my blood sugar was 500. My symptoms were so extreme and I felt so sick the last few weeks before I relized what was going on. but all in all I was symptomatic for about 3 months. One night i woke up to pee for the fifth time that night and brewed a 2 qt. pot of tea, iced it down and drank it all. That was the night I knew something was wrong, the next night was the er show I saw. The feeling in my mouth was dry and gross. No matter what I drank it wouldn’t go away.

    The main symptoms of diabetes are:

    * feeling very thirsty,

    Other symptoms of diabetes can include:

    * often getting thrush, due to the excess glucose in your urine
    * blurred vision, caused by the lens of your eyes becoming dry.
    * cramps,
    * constipation, and
    * skin infections.

    Often times the individual symptoms can go unnoticed, but in combination you can really start to feel like something is wrong. When our son was diagnosed we saw all of the following happening:

    –excessive thirst – drinking many, many litres of water a day
    –excessive urination – every hour, even during the night
    –massive appetite – at one point he ate 7 apples in a row
    –weight loss – even while eating like a horse he lost 10 pounds over the course of a couple of weeks
    –wounds wouldn’t heal – had a cut on his leg that just wouldn’t scab over
    –tooth ache – ended up have a cavity in one of his baby teeth
    –moodiness – at times we didn’t even recognize him
    –headaches – not sure if this was the diabetes or tooth ache, but he had never had them before.

    If you are at all concerned, it is best to just get diagnosed. The tests are simple and getting it under control sooner rather than later will help minimize any complications.

    It isn’t the end of the world but does mean a significant change to lifestyle.

    Best of luck.
