I'll be honest with you. I've been type 1 since I was 1 year old. All of my life my motto has been 'it's the quality of life not quantity'. I'm 38, have had very mild complications, a rough pregnancy and have never been a model diabetic. I enjoy food, especially carbs, and a beer. My a1c is typically a 7. It took me a very long time, 10+years, to loose the pregnancy weight but I'm now 114lbs. I do take lots of vitamins and try to work out at least 3 times a week. I'm a true believer in small portions of any crappy foods. It satisfies my craving and makes me happy too. Six small meals a day helped with the weight too.
You may also want to get your thyroid checked. It is common for type 1 diabetics to develop an under active thyroid. The blood test is called a THS.
Good luck in your search for answers.
References :
See your endo and have them set you up with a dietician so you can have a plan to follow. You CAN lose weight, but you need to do it healthy. You can't starve yourself! But you can eat low carb and stick with healthy choices. You can do it!
References :
it isn't impossible, but it does make it a little more difficult. keep a close eye on your blood sugars, work out, and eat healthy. you might want to keep in contact with your doctor and/or a dietitian. good luck!
References :
Funny enough, it is very tough for people with Type 1 diabetes to lose weight. There are a lack of many hormones that most people get for digestion that us diabetics dont get. The first thing I did when I wanted to lose weight is to get my BGs under control. You cant do anything until that happens. The best way to do that is with an insulin pump and a continuous BG monitor, but not everyone can afford those. Most insurances do cover the pump, so that should be your first step.

If you are already using a pump, then you may want to talk to your doctor about a drug called Symilin. Symilin replaces natural enzymes and hormones that help Type 1 people with digestion and BG control. I have lost 20 pounds like water due to my use of it, and I can tell you its a great way to help your body help itself.

You may also want to try a high-cardio workout. That will help your body burn the calories that you may need to eat to help control BG. Of course, with a pump, you can avoid most lows all together, but again, that can be expensive.
References :
www.minimed.com

Yes, it is possible, but it can be difficult to lose the weight and manage blood sugars. Have doctor help you. Check your insurance policy, some have weight loss benefits, dieticians, nurses to help you. Check local resources, the YMCA, Curves.
I bet doctor is going to be not happy when he/she sees your hA1c lab results!
Do the things you know to do. Lay off the sugar and the junk food, do not buy it.
6 meals a day, with the protein and the carbs distributed evenly between them. 5 servings of veggies and fruit. Get a copy of the food pyramid, and use it.
Set a small goal for yourself, like I will lose 2 pounds in the next two weeks. Or, I will walk around the neighborhood everyday for 15 minutes. And when you meet the goal, set another one. I will lose 2 more pounds. I will walk for 17 minutes.
It is will power, and motivation, and some knowledge. Find a friend to walk with, walk the dog, or the neighbors friendly pooch. Plug into some music. Get a cheap $5 pedometer from Wal-mart, and use it.
I hear "Sweating to the Oldies" Richard Simmon's tapes are back out, they are available on tv commercial. You can stand the 50s and 60s music, buy them and use them.
References :
You can do much better, control the diabetes and lose weight by doing these pranayam (breathing exercise). You can monitor weight and sugar level, so you will notice the benefit within weeks.Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume later. Once you have done both pranayam for 30 minutes each twice a day for a week, you will see definite results.Continue once a day after the weight and diabetes are in control. You may need less medicine for diabetes if you continue pranayam for rest of life.
Anulom Vilom –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day(maximum 60 minutes in one day).
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day.(Max 60 min/day) Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.
References :
You can lose weight, don't give up! Losing weight and exercising will help keep your sugar under control. The two go hand in hand. Don't except diabetes as a defeat and an excuse. You can manage the disease and your weight. Discuss a healthy plan with your doctor and take control. Good luck!
References :
Of course it is. Don't give up. You just need more discipline.

Perhaps try having your meals with friends who can help to keep an eye on you. Gentle reminders from them shouldn't hurt too.

Be patient. It's always hard to lose weight at first, especially if you expect quick results. Give it time.

Here's some easy exercise you can attempt daily. Try walking more. Get off the bus one or two stops early, or try walking up one or two floors.

Maybe you can also try talking with a dietician who can prescibe healthy (and hopefully, convenient) meals that you can stick to.

Good luck!
