the best you can do to prevent diabetes is follow a pre-diabetic diet. It's mostly the same diet people with diabetes follow. You should try to avoid carbohydrates as much as possible. A good diet to follow is the glycemic index diet. More information can be found at http://www.diabeticmenu-blog.com/glycemic-menu.html
References :
http://www.diabeticmenu-blog.com

Low sugar, balanced meals with whole grains at regular times.
Get a glucose meter & check your blood sugar 2 hours after eating.
References :
In one half you have your protein aand on the other half your starchy foods. Very simple ,and it works...
References :
Learn to count carbs and keep it low. We do need carbs but try and get them from natural sources, rather than things like Pop tarts.
Read the labels on anything that comes in a box or jar.
Having no idea of your age ,weight, activity level we cannot prescribe a diet for you.
Best thing is to eat fresh foods until you can meet with a dietitian who can help.
Good luck.
